Bring the HUD back

Turn on the minimap, PDA messages, ammo counter, Ammo Check pop-up and the Body Health System display.

Deviation from ROMEO: 3/3

How far this changes ROMEO's intended gameplay: 1 is a small change, 3 is a bigger departure.

Touches

  • CLIKRΔD MCM Values (axr_options.ltx)
  • Wearable Devices (wd.ltx)
  • xx-Hide HUD PDA Messages - Skibbo
  • xx-PDA HUD ICON F.O.C - CLIKRΔD Group
  • xx-Ammo Check Enhanced Rework v3.3 - Priler

ROMEO hides the HUD in four different places: the game options, Wearable Devices, MCM, and two small mods. Do the first step, then pick the parts you want.

1. Turn the HUD on

ROMEO sets the game option show_hud to false, which hides everything else on this page.

  1. Press Esc, then go to Options → Video → HUD.
  2. Turn on Show HUD.

2. Wearable Devices HUD tab

ROMEO’s Wearable Devices hides several HUD parts on purpose, so you have to “own the device” to see them. Press M to open it and go to the HUD tab. Turn on any of these:

  • Ammo counter
  • Fire mode
  • Status Icons
  • BHS HUD (the Body Health System limb display)
  • Radio Messages. This one is needed for PDA messages (see below).
  • Companions

These are saved in overwrite/gamedata/configs/wd.ltx, where 0 means shown and 1 means hidden.

3. Minimap

ROMEO keeps GAMMA’s Minimap Toggle mod. With the HUD on, press / (slash) to show or hide the minimap. You can change the key in MCM → Mini Map Toggle.

4. PDA messages

Turning on Radio Messages in step 2 isn’t enough. A ROMEO mod also moves the message pop-ups off-screen and mutes their sounds.

  1. Close the game. In MO2, under CLIKRΔD - Audio, untick xx-Hide HUD PDA Messages - Skibbo.
  2. Optional: to get the flashing PDA notification icon back too, untick xx-PDA HUD ICON F.O.C - CLIKRΔD Group.
  3. Optional: ROMEO also turns off all the random PDA chatter. To get it back, go to Options → ALife → Dynamic News and turn the categories back on.

5. Ammo Check pop-up and mag HUD

Open MCM → Ammo Check:

  • Turn on Show Ammo Message for the pop-up when you check your mag.
  • Turn on Enable Floating Mag HUD for the bar that shows how full your mag is.

Undo this tweak

Undo only the parts you changed. Use your recorded settings or pre-tweak backups to preserve your other preferences.

  1. In MCM → Ammo Check, restore the previous values of Show Ammo Message and Enable Floating Mag HUD.
  2. Restore the Wearable Devices → HUD toggles and Options → ALife → Dynamic News categories you changed to their previous values. If you edited overwrite/gamedata/configs/wd.ltx directly, restore your backup of that file with the game closed.
  3. If you enabled the minimap, press / to hide it again while the HUD is still visible.
  4. Close the game. Re-enable xx-Hide HUD PDA Messages - Skibbo and xx-PDA HUD ICON F.O.C - CLIKRΔD Group in MO2 if you disabled them for this guide.
  5. To return to ROMEO’s hidden HUD, turn Options → Video → HUD → Show HUD off again.
